Ex Libris Library Extension Program

Beginning in February 2004 as "The Book Club" at Morningview Transitional Care Center, Ex Libris is a community outreach program bringing a wide variety of resources from the library to residents of four local assisted living facilities. Through carefully constructed programs featuring short stories, poetry, anecdotes, humor etc., volunteer readers provide bi-monthly life enrichment to that segment of the community no longer able to get to the library. Since July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009, a total of 84 programs will have been given with a projected 706 people attending. This represents 252 volunteer hours. New volunteers are being sought!

Currently, six facilities are served: Morning View Transitional Care Center, Wellington Assisted Living, Liberty Assisted Living, Asbury Transitional Care Center, Asbury Place Assisted Living and Sterling House. Programs are given twice a month at each facility and generally run for 45-60 minutes.

Ex Libris is NOT a book discussion group NOR is it the reading of onebook to the residents. Rather, it is a multidimensional program which incorporates reading, poetry, song, humor, storytelling, and occasionally "show and tell". Descriptions of personal hobbies, travels and life experience also create fascinating programs.

SEEKING A FEW GOOD VOLUNTEERS: Requests continue to come in to bring Ex Libris to other facilities. With the addition of a few more members to the Ex Libris Team, these requests can be honored. Won't you help?

WHO SHOULD WANT TO JOIN EX LIBRIS?

1. Anyone who wishes to "give something back" to the community, now that they have the time in which to do it.
2. Anyone who would like to share their love of books, reading, storytelling or general knowledge about the world around us with others.
3. Anyone who wishes to honor and learn first hand from the very people who were and still are "The Greatest Generation".
4. Anyone who can imagine what it would be like to no longer be able to take advantage of the wealth of information and entertainment available to all of us through our libraries which keeps us in touch with the world.
5. Anyone who can appreciate the quotation from Lord of the Rings when Gandalf answers Frodo's question as to what he should do:
"All you have to do is decide what to do with the time that has been given you."
