JULY 2010 PROGRAMS AT BLOUNT COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY
For a challenge involving great fun, try constructing a boat from cardboard (you can use duct tape, glue and latex paint to hold it together) and then get in it and race it at the John Sevier Swimming Pool on Friday, July 9. This is a great activity for youth groups, Scout troops, families, friends. Grab a buddy and start competing for award trophies!
There will also be a programs about the new Pistol Creek Wetlands Center by Dr. Ben Cash; “Exploring Ocean Depths: Past, Present & Future” by Mr. Johnny Johnson, the co-founder of a company which develops vessels, equipment and robotics for deep sea exploration, vessel retrieval, even outer space; “Beautiful Caribbean Adventure” travelogue by Larry Ackley; and this year’s outdoor Shakespeare theatre performance, “Romeo and Juliet,” by the Tennessee Stage Company, preceded by a dueling demonstration by members of the Society for Creative Anachronism. The “Romeo and Juliet” performance will also be the beginning of the Hot Summer Nights Series for 2010 which will include concerts by Jeff Barbra and Sarah Pirkle and by Michael Bethea.
Even if you missed getting started in the Summer Reading Programs in June, there’s still time to drop by the library, pick up a game/reading card, read, register and enter to win prizes. And there are still some really great events and activities coming up in July related to the water theme of each of the three programs: Adult—“Water Your Mind, Read”; Teen—“Make Waves at Your Library, Read”; and Children—“Make a Splash, Read.”

Adult Summer Reading Program, “Water Your Mind,” sign up will be available so that adults can read and win prizes during June and July. Register at the Kick-Off Beach Party and receive reading program cards. If unable to attend the Kick-Off, adults can register at the library’s Check-Out or Check-In Circulation Desks at any time during the summer. Prize drawings will be on Mondays, June 14 & 28; July 12 & 26, with the Grand Prize Drawing on Monday, August 2. Winners will be contacted by phone; it is not necessary to be present to win. Prizes are provided by the Blount County Friends of the Library.

Thursday, July 8, 7:00-8:00 p.m., “Wetlands: Their Diversity and Importance” by Ben Cash, Ph.D., Maryville College professor who campaigned for and promoted the Pistol Creek Wetlands. This presentation will be in the Sharon Lawson Room of the library.
8:30-9:30 p.m., “Tour of Pistol Creek Wetlands Center,” located at the intersection of Montvale Station and Sandy Springs Roads in Maryville. Ben Cash, Ph.D., will lead a tour of the wetlands and discuss the significance of preserving this wetlands as well as others. Participants in this program will need to supply their own transportation to get to the Pistol Creek Wetlands Center, located at the intersection of Montvale Station and Sandy Springs Roads.

Tuesday, July 13, 7:00 p.m., “Exploring the Depths of the Ocean: Past, Present and Future” by Mr. Johnny Johnson, a University of Tennessee graduate and currently a Townsend resident, who in 1964 co-founded Oceaneering International, Inc., a global company with 7,900 employees in 68 locations in 21 countries. The company has worked on various projects of historic note: NASA’s Challenger, the Lusitania, the Andrea Doria, the Titanic, Value Jet, the USS Hundley. Johnson will discuss his company’s involvement in developing advanced applied technology for customers who operate in marine, space and other harsh environments, including defense and even the space industry. The company’s business offerings include remotely-operated vehicles, mobile offshore production systems, built-to-order specialty hardware, engineering and project management, sub-sea intervention and installation services, non-destructive testing and inspection, and manned diving. This program will be in the Sharon Lawson Room.

Tuesday, July 20, 7:00 p.m., “Beautiful Caribbean Adventure Travelogue” by Larry Ackley. After multiple trips to Europe and Canada since 1997, Larry and his wife, Judy, discovered cruises. Since 2006, they have been on nine cruises, five of them in the Caribbean, with two additional Caribbean cruises scheduled within the next seven months. Ackley will discuss and show slides about the Caribbean Sea, the many islands and the countries that border the Sea. This slide presentation will be in the Sharon Lawson Room.

Because the play will be OUTDOORS on the front lawn of the library, the audience should bring lawn chairs. Parking is available in the extra lot at the side of the library’s parking lot and also in the public parking lots next to The Daily Times building (across the pedestrian bridge) and in the Harper Street parking lot across from First Tennessee Bank. This performance is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. If rain occurs and persists to cause cancellation of the performance, the rain date for the performance is Tuesday, August 10, at 6:30 p.m.
All Day: “Talk Like Shakespeare Day.” Have fun speaking in the language of the bard himself. (E.g., Let thy manner of speech and words transporteth thee to the era of Sir William Shakespeare. This exercise of duty will prepareth thee and thy kinsmen so that thou wilt more fully comprehendeth the eve’s performance by the Tennessee Stage Company of Romeo and Juliet.) For more examples, contact the Reference Desk at the Blount County Public Library.

Monday, August 2: “Grand Prize Drawing” will be the final prize drawing for the Adult Summer Reading Program. Participants do not have to be present to win.
Thursdays in August (5, 12, 19, 26), 7:00 p.m., “The 2010 Hot Summer Nights Concert Series at the Library.” Each Thursday night in August, a concert artist(s) will perform a variety of music, sponsored by the Blount County Friends of the Library. The public is invited to attend and enjoy.
Thursday, August 5, 7:00 p.m., “Jeff Barbra & Sarah Pirkle Concert” will provide original acoustic music seasoned with Americana--bluegrass, classic country, old-time and folk--by husband-wife duo: Jeff on guitar and mandolin and Sarah on fiddle.

Teen Summer Reading Program, “Make Waves at Your Library, Read,” sign up will be available so that middle school and high school teens can read and win prizes during June and July. Register at the Kick-Off Beach Party and Dance or at Reference Desk #2 at the Blount County Public Library to receive reading program log cards. Beginning June 1, teens may enter their names for prize drawings for each 500 pages read. The more teens read, the more chances there are to win. If unable to attend the Kick-Off, teens can register at the library’s Reference Desk #2 at any time during the summer. Weekly prize drawings will be awarded with prizes such as movie passes or $10 gift cards. Monthly drawings will be a $25 gift card. The Grand Prize is a $75 gift card. Participants do not have to be present to win. To participate, students must have a Blount County Public Library card. Prizes are provided by the Blount County Friends of the Library.

Saturday, July 24, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., “Wild About Flowers! A Paper Filigree Class for Teens” with Debora Blind, artist-in-residence at Tremont (Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont). This class is perfect for folks who like flowers and also enjoy paper crafting. Learn how to create delightful paper filigree (a.k.a. quilling) flowers by following easy directions. Kits for making the flowers will be available from the instructor. Pre-registration is required by Thursday, July 22, at the library Reference #2 Desk. A materials fee of $2.00 will be required with pre-registration. This class will be in Dorothy Herron Room A.

August is Volunteer Reader Month. Story Hourparents have an opportunity during the month of August to present their own program. A sign-up sheet located on the children’s check-out desk during July will allow parents to select a particular date that they would like to read stories and prepare a coloring page or craft for the regular story hour groups.

Pre-School Story Hours & Crafts
First and third Tuesday of each month, July 6 & 20, 6:30 pm, Twilight Tales Story Hour will be presented. This program is an evening story hour for pre-school and early elementary aged children.
Tuesday and Friday, 10:00 a.m., Tales of Wonder Story Hours for ages 3-5 include stories, puppets, fun, and crafts.
Wednesday, 10:00 & 10:30 a.m., Toddlers’ Tadpole Tales story hours for ages two and under include stories, songs & movement, rhyme time, puppets, crafts, and coloring.
Foreign Language Story Hours: Community volunteers have previously hosted foreign language story hours at our library. We invite anyone interested in presenting this kind of service to contact the children’s library at 273-1414.
