Teens are invited to make and decorate kites at a Kite Making workshop on Sat., March 13, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Co-sponsored by Fine Arts Blount (FAB) and the Blount County Public Library, the workshop is at the library. Students in middle school and high school must register and submit a $5 deposit at the library’s reference genealogy desk by Wed., March 10.
UT JAZZ SINGERS TO PERFORM AT Blount County Public Library
UT Jazz Choir Shares Jazz Performance
UT Singers Jazz Choir, under the direction of Wendel Werner, will perform their premier concert at the Blount County Public Library on Saturday, March 6, at 2:00 p.m.
Werner, an accomplished composer and arranger, is a jazz pianist who directs the UT Singers and Jazz Choirs. He has also directed other choirs at other area colleges (Roane State, Knoxville College) and organizations.
Werner performed at the library in August 2009 during the Hot Summer Nights concert series. He performs frequently at the Knoxville Museum of Arts “Alive After Five,” and he started the group “Just in Time,” a female jazz choir.
He earned his Bachelor of Music in studio music and jazz and his Master of Music in choral directing, both at the University of Tennessee.
Maryville native, Erica Collins Steffee, will speak about “Life in a Dacha, an American Family in Moscow, 1949-50,” on Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at the Blount County Library.

Thursday, April 29, 7:00 p.m., “ Knoxville Symphony Orchestra String Quartet Concert.” Sponsored by Pellissippi State Technical Community College, a KSO string quartet will perform a concert in the Reading Rotunda of the library.
Saturday, May 1, 2:00 p.m., “Grace Notes Flute Ensemble,” under the direction of Dr. Sue Swilley, will perform a spring flute choir concert in the Reading Rotunda of the library.

Tuesday, March 9, 7:00 p.m., “Life in a Dacha: An American Family [Ralph & Maria Collins] in Moscow” by Erica Collins Steffee, daughter of Ralph & Maria Collins. Erica Collins Steffee, was born at the old Fort Craig Hospital in Maryville, while her father was professor of French and German at Maryville College. In 1945, Dr. Collins took a job with the State Department. His assignments abroad included two years, 1949-50, in Moscow. Erica Collins Steffee will discuss the family’s years in Moscow, where her father served and where her mother, Maria, established the Anglo-American school for children of embassy personnel. The presentation will be in the Sharon Lawson Room of the library.
Sunday, March 14, 2:00 p.m., “Legends of the Game: Negro League History.” Bryan Steverson, a lifelong baseball fan and a Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), Hall of Fame (HOF) and Negro League Baseball Museum (NLBM) member, will discuss Negro League History. In addition, a guest will present to the library a board game, “Legends of the Game,” developed by Rick Mosley. Appropriate for families with children, both the program and the board game help participants learn more about Negro League History. This presentation will be in the Sharon Lawson Room of the library.

Twilight Tales Story Hour will be presented on the first and third Tuesday evening of each month at 6:30 pm. This program is an evening story hour for pre-school and early elementary aged children. Join the fun on March 2 & 16.
