The Maryville Area Dulcimer Club performed in concert on Monday, November 6, 2017, at 7 p.m. at Blount County Public Library. The program included music from a variety of genres and decades..
The Maryville Area Dulcimer Club (MADC) has an interesting blend of men and women with diversified ages, walks of life and skill levels. Participants enjoy playing a variety of music: fiddle tunes, hymns, waltzes, Celtic, Civil War and Appalachian—anything that sounds good!
The mountain dulcimer is the main instrument members play; however just about any instrument is welcomed. Individuals in the club membership have been known to play ban jammers (mountain dulcimer & banjo combo), hammered dulcimers, violins, guitars, mandolins, autoharps, and bass fiddles.
Various members of the club, or the club as a whole, have put on concerts for community festivals and clubs, nursing and assisted living homes and church services or gatherings. An annual community concert is provided at Blount County Public Library.
The club meets every first and third Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Monte Vista Baptist Church. Contact persons for the club are Jan Wagner and Sandi Scrugham.
MADC will welcome into the group anybody with a willing heart and love of music. There is no requirement for reading music when one plays the mountain dulcimer. Mature children are also welcome as long as a parent or responsible adult accompanies them at the meeting. For those who are raw beginners, the club provides informal mentoring and refers them to area instructors and venues.
Maryville Area Dulcimer Club (MADC) held its first meeting in January of 2009. Several Maryville individuals, who had participated in dulcimer clubs in the general area, began to think it was about time to organize a group locally. The initial goal of the club was to attain a gathering of Maryville area people who would enjoy playing and jamming in addition to sharing the love of music with the community. The club has grown to include about 45 active members.
