Library Main Gallery
Anne Van Curen—actress, RN, and Smokies hiking enthusiast—portrays Emma “Grandma” Gatewood as she describes what it was like to be the first woman to solo hike the Appalachian Trail in 1955.
The dramatization is based on Ben Montgomery’s book Grandma Gatewood’s Walk: the Inspiring Story of the Woman Who Saved the Appalachian Trail, written from accounts by Gatewood’s surviving family members, newspaper and magazine articles, and her own diaries and trail journals.
Open to the public, this program is hosted by the Blount County Public Library, located at 508 N. Cusick Street, Maryville. For further information about library programs or services, call 982-0981 or visit the library website.
