The Taming of the Shrew, one of William Shakespeare’s comedies, will be performed live by the Tennessee Stage Company in the Reading Rotunda end of the Main Gallery on Monday, July 27, at 6:30 p.m.
This play is appropriate for all ages. In the story, a wealthy old man, Baptiste Minola, has two daughters, one a fair young maiden, Bianca, who has three suitors, including Lucentio, trying to win her hand in marriage. A condition of the marriage of Bianca, however, is that her elder, vicious-tempered sister, Katherine, must marry first.
Fortunately, Petruchio arrives on the scene, quite willing to marry anyone who is rich, even Katherine. Late to his own wedding, Petruchio begins the process of “taming” Katherine while Lucentio proceeds to try to win the hand of Bianca. Meanwhile, one of her suitors, Hortensio, decides to marry a wealthy widow. The three new husbands decide to stage a contest to see which of their wives will be most obedient – with surprising results.
