Blount County Friends of the Library Newsletter January 2015

Artfully Gourmet Brunch or Lunch,
Classic E-books and Hard Copies, and Great Vienna Coffee Roasts:
BCFriends of the Library helped set up a Café befitting all Readers

Bookmark Cafe counter

“I like my coffee with cream and my literature with optimism.” Abigail Reynolds, Pemberley by the Sea.

Strolling in to the Blount County library you always expect the fragrance of books and good read to await you.  Sometimes, walking in to the library you can catch a lingering aroma of fresh brewed coffee, or the fragrance of cinnamon, chocolate or vanilla calling your name from the Bookmark Café.

Breakfast waits for you in the form a muffin or bagel.  Lunch can be a steaming cup of soup; pasta salad; Chicken-n-Dumplings; Panini’s or even a hot dog!  Snacks for you throughout the day include the cutest fresh baked cupcakes, cookies, brownies, scones, candies and ice creams.  Quench your thirst with lattes, espressos, flavored coffees, teas, and even fruit smoothies.

The Café coordinates many of their menu items to match the activities of the library.  A good example of this would be the Pumpkin Lattes served during the Pumpkin display in October.

The Bookmark Café partnered with Southland Books which supplies the soups and salads not prepared by the staff, and the Café proudly serves Vienna Coffees, a local Maryville roaster.

Karen, the manager for almost two years, is very proud of the Café and boasts of a 100 score from the latest health department inspection.  Not many establishments ever receive a perfect score!  The library has a beautifully appointed Conference facility available to the public.  The conference area is equipped with a spacious kitchen for staging the catering services the Café offers to organizations using the meeting rooms, a convenient service for any group.

All the members of the staff are very friendly and helpful, your Baristas are;  Karen, a Psychology/English major with a degree from Carson Newman University and a Masters in Psychology from University of Tennessee. Katie J, a scientist, with a BS in Biology from Maryville College; Katie S, is also a scientist with her degree in Bio Chemistry from Maryville College; Darcy, has a Psychology degree from Maryville College; and Alex is attending college, took time off for missionary work, and will have her degree in the not too distant future.  If a Barista can’t remember your name, you can bet she’ll remember what “your usual” is.

When the staff isn’t busy pouring coffee or serving tasty foods, they are helping other sections of the library.  Currently, a snafu in the new computer system had Children’s Books listed as lost, when in fact they had been purged, discarded and donated to the Friends quarterly book sale.  Katie J was working with stacks of books between customers on a chilly December morning.

The art gracing the walls of the Bookmark Café is changed monthly and is supplied by different Art Guilds and organizations throughout Blount County.  Come to the Bookmark Café, admire the local art, share a conversation, grab a cup, a treat, and curl up with a good book in our fabulous library!

December 13th - Maryville Alcoa Christmas Parade

Named the BOOK WORM, and representing the Blount County Friends of the Library, the float was once again decorated and organized by Lee and Harry Downey. Stacked high with around 1000 children’s books of all ages, candy cane tied book marks with the 2015 Library book sale dates, a tree, a bucket full of donated candy for tossing, and a Mrs. Claus, the Book Worm was ready to go!

The WALKERS and candy tossers are as many BCFOL Friends, relatives and friends that are willing to hand out books and bookmarks along the 2+ mile parade route, and toss out candy from the float to the crowds. This year the Book Worm even made The Maryville Times.

Many thanks go out to all who support the Book Worm - it definitely wouldn't exist without you!

Not just a month long effort, it is an ongoing effort all year long to prepare for the parade. Volunteers are always needed. Contact Lee Downey at 865-809-5787 for more information.

Need inspiration for a gift? Want something that isn't the "usual" gift card or item that will never be used? Seen? Heard of again?  Why not try giving something that is still always the rage? A book!

Have you been to the Blount County Friend of the Library ebay store? There are so many books to choose from! Over 500 and all types! Cookbooks. Collectibles. History. Childrens..... Click on the ebay logo above to see what is available!
What is a book? Why, it's a front and back cover; a spine; and pages of adventure, romance, mystery, knowledge, and whatever else the author deems to include. Or not.
The Friends of the Library book discussion group has been reading some interesting books.  For December we read a fun Fannie Flagg book titled “The All-Girl Filling Station’s Last Reunion”.  On the schedule for January is a novel, “Orphan Train, by Christina Baker Kline, and in February “The Signature of All Things” by Elizabeth Gilbert.  This group meets the second Wednesday of each month at 10:15 in the board room at the library and new members are welcome.
Many wonderful wishes to you for 2015!
Together we can make it the best 2015, by being present, aware, and true.
