Library Road Show Debuts at New Venue
Barbara Zurl, Director
Ex Libris Library Extension Program

What better way to celebrate the arrival of summer than being invited to the home of friends and spending an afternoon filled with stories, song and laughter? That is exactly what happened to Ex Libris just days before summer 2015 eased its way across the hills of East Tennessee.

On June 18th, Kindred – Fairpark was added to the list of facilities availing themselves of the “Library Road Show.”  Fourteen residents attended the debut program  and learned more than they  ever imagined about Atlantic City (N.J.)’s  world famous Steel Pier – including the history of the pier itself, the amazing Diving Horse, and the origin of Salt Water Taffy. Then it was on to “Lucky” Lindy who was the very first ever living person, honored by having their name placed on a U.S. postage stamp.

All eyes next were focused on a beautiful, hand-crafted shadow-box made for one of the presenters, who went on to explain the curious history of these works of art – did you know it derives from a naval tradition?

In true Ex Libris fashion, no program ends without laughter. The day’s jokes were right on target and the audience loved it.

Currently nine facilities within Blount County are served. Eighteen 45-60 minute programs are delivered each month. Anyone interested in seeing first-hand what a Library Road Show consists of is encouraged to contact me at 865-977-5034 or via e-mail at Front row seats are currently available – and the price is right.

Welcome FOL New Board Members

By Dolores Philpot

Something old, something new the saying goes, and among the new as board member is Bob Ramger, presently in an At Large position, but a member since 1999. His resume includes two stints as past President and six years as Board member. Presently he helps with book drops (donation bin) and our quarterly book sales.

Another long time FOL supporter is Lisa Misosky, who reports a similar longevity as a Friend of the Library, 15-18 years, but is now an At Large Member of the Board. Besides running Southland Books, which keeps her very busy, she still found time to help organize our eBay store effort and continues to contribute books to our Jail Library outreach.

Board members, Mary Moore (At Large), Betty Jo Fowler (Treasurer), Dolores Philpot (At Large), Lew Abramson (At Large), and Bob Meyer (Secretary), and Claudia Erwin are newer to FOL. Their time as members varies from 3 months to 6 years. Volunteer jobs are many and varied.

Mary is in charge of the fiction books for book sales as well as staffing during the sales. Betty Jo also helps in the book sales as well as volunteering in the Reference Department and Computer lab. Dolores is involved as newsletter writer, Ex Libris, and the Jailbirds (Jail Library outreach). Lew values eBay books, and picks up cardboard boxes for book sale use. Bob Meyer works the book sales. Claudia helps manage Social Media areas for FOL. This includes Facebook, Pinterest and soon, Twitter. She also helps with eBay work and is a member of the Jailbirds group.

Besides the Friends’ volunteer work, some of the new group of Board members find time for other community involvement including Alcoa Kiwanis (Bob Ramger), Blount County Retired Teachers Association (Mary), Gate-Gateway to Independence, AARP taxes, Operation Christmas Child (Betty Jo), and Habitat for Humanity, Boys and Girls Club and Second Harvest (Bob Myers).
